Several hotels taking bookings for this winter’s football World Cup refused to accommodate gay couples, despite assurances from world governing body FIFA that they would.
A Scandinavian investigation revealed that three FIFA-approved hotels in Qatar – where male homosexuality is punishable by 3 years’ prison and even death – flat-out refused to process bookings. 20 more demanded that guests didn’t publicly display their homosexuality.
LGBTQ+ rights groups have accused FIFA and local organizers of failing to prove it’s safe to travel to the country.
